The  topic of the week has been the HEAT. I love it when the weather “forecasters’ get excited about  extreme weather.

There are durachos ( extreme thunderstorms bordering on tornadoes), snowmagedon, and the heat index. Currently we are all excited about the hot temperatures in the suburbs of Washington DC.

I have lived my entire life in this area. I have lived in homes where there was no air conditioning. In fact 11 years ago, I was extremely pregnant with our third child. We lived in our current home which did not have any type of cooling system except the attic fan.  I was a few days overdue and the heat index was a steady 102 degrees at day and it felt like it would cool to about 85 at night. With my pregnant body I was a heat ball!

We would all go to the basement and turn on fans and sleep with a wet sheet on.I remember the night before I went into labor , my husband says maybe we should consider getting AC? I wanted to choke him!

But I agreed it was a great idea. We finally got central air conditioning a couple of years later.

I feel like we have become soft with AC . The air quality is terrible. Our dogs want to come to the basement and lay on the cool floor. They are fluffy German Shepherd dogs and the heat is intense for them.

DSCF1840Anthem plops  on the floor and prefer to go out early with me in the garden and only when she needs to do her thing.  Jack retreats to his crate or finds a spot over an AC vent. The chickens have to stay out now. Their coop gets hot in the middle of the day. We bring them into the yard and they find the prefect spot under the fig tree. We give them water and yesterday they got a treat of watermelon rind.

We all had some watermelon on the porch. Phil installed two ceiling fans on the screened porch. We can sit out there and read or do school work and still be somewhat cooler than being out completely.

Yesterday was the hottest day yet. We ran an extension cord out the door so I could hook up a fan. I pointed it towards the fig tree. The pullets positioned themselves in front of the fan( a few feet away) when they would lay down. Then I’d see them walking the garden. They found the area that the bunnies usually take cover  (under a mountain laurel  bush) and have taken over it. It is a cool and hidden space.

Finally the pool! Well, the water was weirdly warm and not so refreshing. Maybe once the heat wave subsides, the water in the pool will cool.

Workout indoors. Even though when I work out indoors I sweat like crazy!

Happy Hydrating!!!
